Being the most loving, joyous and resourceful mom should not involve neglecting your wellbeing. Self-care is a vital part of being the best mom you can be. In this article, we are going to outline six simple self-care ideas for busy ( and exhausted) moms. To put your best self forward, you have to nourish your body, your mind, and your soul first. Being everything to everyone every day can sometimes lead to self-neglect.

 Take these easy ideas and inject some self-adoration into your life today, you deserve it. 

                                         Make a Commitment to Yourself 

When you become a mother, you commit to caring for a child. However, caring for a little one can often mean that you neglect your own needs. Make a commitment to yourself by scheduling regular appointments for self-care. Book yourself a regular pedicure, hire a nanny or ask your husband, friend or family member to take care of the kids. 

                                                                Move 

Move your body, get active. Exercising is self-care, so make a solid commitment to moving your body on a regular basis. Studies undertaken by The Cooper Institute, Dallas, Texas indicate that exercise increases longevity and reduces the risk of  stroke, colon cancer, and other diseases. Regular exercise is also beneficial for your mental and emotional health. When you move your body, happy hormones such as endorphins are released, thus boosting the mood and improving your overall health. 

Take a walk, dance around the house, do some jumping jacks whenever you get the chance. Get your blood pumping and give your body the love that it deserves. 

                                                                Eat Well 

Feed your body with healthy, nourishing food. Sara Hass RDN, LDN states  “You need to nourish yourself with proper foods. It’s great for your kids to see you practicing self-care because you’re modeling healthy behavior.” 

Include plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables in your diet. Dark leafy greens contain magnesium which is a natural mood booster. Get your greens in by including spinach or kale in smoothies that include berries, banana, and other sweet fruits. Drink plenty of water and incorporate plenty of healthy fats into your diet; such as avocado, nuts and seeds and oily fish like salmon or mackerel. Stick with nuts, seeds, and avocado if you are a vegan or vegetarian. 

                                                       Stay Connected 

Connect with friends and family as often as you can. Schedule a date night once a month, and time out with friends or family once a month too. Isolating yourself and focusing solely on being a mom is a form of self-neglect. Get out there and live your best life! 

                                                                  Journal 

Write your thoughts and feelings down on paper, free-flowing, heartfelt and honest. Just write. 

                                                           Listen to Music 

Listen to inspirational music, something to uplift and soothe you. Remember, as a mom, it is not your obligation to remain positive and happy all the time, so if you feel like you need to get into your feelings and listen to a sad song just so you can cry it out, do that. Put yourself first. 

Being a mom is rewarding yet exhausting. Make yourself a priority, do not feel guilty about it. Motherhood is all the more challenging when you do not make time for yourself.
